Students and Teachers/Organizations: Compete for a chance to win prizes!

To celebrate Women’s History Month in March, the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Office on the Status of Women (with financial support from the Friends of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women) is hosting its 2nd annual Women’s History Month video contest to celebrate women’s history.  Entries are open to students in grades 5-12 and schools/organizations that work with students in grades 5-12.

Video Submission Deadline: Wednesday, March 1st, 2017

Entrants should create an original one (1) to three (3) minute video examining how women (one or more women) in Iowa’s history have affected life in Iowa, the nation, or the world today.

Some ideas for topics may include (but are not limited to) women’s roles in:

  • Civil rights
  • Women’s suffrage
  • Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields
  • Education
  • The arts and culture
  • Government
  • Medicine
  • Law
  • Agriculture

Submission Guidelines

Student entrants must submit a one (1) to three (3) minute video in one of two categories based on the following age categories of students (according to attendance through May 2017):

  • Category one: Grades 5-8.
  • Category two: Grades 9-12.

Limit: Up to 5 students may be included in each video and/or involved in video production.

Submitted videos may be featured on the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ website, screened on YouTube, and/or other promotional venues.

Videos are due

Videos must be post-marked or posted to YouTube by March 1st, 2017 to be considered for the contest.

Judging

Videos that meet the contest guidelines will initially be reviewed by a panel of judges from contest partners. The top three videos in each category will be posted on the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ website on Friday, March 10th. Electronic voting (through the Iowa Department of Human Rights website) will be open to the public to vote on the videos on March 10th through March 24th. Winners will be determined and announced the following week. 

Prizes

Students

Each student in the video and/or included in the video production will receive a $50 prize if the submitted video wins first place. Up to 5 students may be included in the video and/or video production.

Teachers/Organizations that work with students

The top two school districts/organizations (one winner in each category) associated with the winning video will be awarded a $250 prize to be used for school supplies for the winning classroom/organization.

There is also an option for a visit by the Director of the Iowa Department of Human Rights and a representative from the Friends of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women for an all-school assembly or to meet with the winning students and classroom/organization to present the award.
