Mary J. Coggeshall Votes for Women Marker - The National Votes for Women Trail
We are pleased to announce the placement of the Mary J. Coggeshall Votes for Women Marker on the Iowa State Capitol Grounds. The Iowa Capitol Planning Commission approved the marker and it was placed in the flowerbed south of the Pioneer Statuary Group | Buffalo Fountain, which is located west of the Iowa State Capitol on September 17, 2020. Sponsored by the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites, the National Votes for Women Trail recognizes and celebrates the diversity of people and groups active in the struggle for women’s suffrage. The Trail consists of two parts: a database with digital map, and a program of historical markers for about 250 women’s suffrage sites across the country, funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and the federal Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission. Through crowd-sourcing, the database and digital map collects sites from all over our country to tell the story of suffrage for all women, of all ethnicities, classes, and geographic areas, from the colonial period to the present. Our mission is to:
- Serve as the central permanent office to advocate for women and girls.
- Coordinate and cooperate with the efforts of state departments and agencies to serve the needs of women and girls in participating fully in the economic, social, and cultural life of the state, and provide direct assistance to individuals who request it.
- Serve as the clearinghouse on programs and agencies operating to assist women and girls.
- Develop, coordinate, and assist other public or private organizations which serve women and girls.
The Office on the Status of Women works closely with the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women.
