Public ceremony on Friday, February 3, 2017 

Due to the icy weather, the MLK Celebration originally scheduled for January 16 will now be held on February 3, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at the Wallace State Office Building.   The annual State of Iowa celebration honoring the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is hosted by the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Office on the Status of African-Americans.  

City of Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission Director, Joshua V. Barr, will offer the keynote speech.  Winning students of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Call 2 Serve Contest will receive awards. Alfreda Emery of Des Moines and Police Chief Mark Prosser of Storm Lake will be recognized for individual achievement.

Please join us for a three hour session on ‘Best Practices for nonprofit and charitable Excellence’ delivered by the University of Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center to learn about best practices to build and strengthen your ethnic boards.

Topics include

 By-Laws and governing document, maintaining 501(c)3 Status, government filings, developing mission statement, Strategic planning, funding for the plan, Board of director responsibilities, board membership and more.

Stepping up for racial justice with the Iowa legislature.

Adelante hacia la justica con la asemblea legislativa de Iowa.  

Learn how to increase your power to speak up for racial justice through the legislative process. 

Join DSM SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) and the Iowa Office of Latino Affairs for an evening of education about the Iowa legislature. 

The event will include:

  • Talk on the legislative process from Drake law professor Julie Smith
  • Training on how to speak to your legislators from Vanessa Marcano-Kelly
  • Information on lobby days will be available for "next steps" of action
  • Q&A session. 

Free-will donations will be accepted for Trinity Las Americas UMC in gratitude for use of their space.
