Michelle was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and graduated from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School then went to Mount Mercy College and received her bachelors degree focusing on Psychology and Music.  She received her Masters degree from the University of Iowa in Rehabilitation Counseling with a specialization in Mental Health. She presently works at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in an Adult Behavioral Health Unit. She is married to retired Air Force Master Sargent Joseph Michalec, who served 20 years in the US Air Force.  

Michelle has 2 step children; Joe and Jenny and has 7 Grandchildren; Kayla, Tom, Noah, Hannah, Joe III, Renee, and Dean.  In the past she has volunteered for The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Red Cross, Mercy Hospital, and several other organizations over the years.  Michelle is 54, and is presently the chair of the Commission for Person's With Disabilities and has served on this commission for several years.  She also serves as a present member of the Human Rights Board for Department of Human Rights. Michelle has a culturally diverse background and is fluent in German.  Michelle is  a believer in advocacy and uses her skills and abilities to help others to advance in the world.  She believes that in this world there are no strangers, just friends we haven't met. She is never too busy to make or to help a friend.
