Marlú Abarca  is a one of the newest and youngest commissioners to join the Iowa Commission on Latino Affairs. She is a Grinnell College graduate with a passion for education, youth, and social justice. She volunteers her time serving on several Boards of Directors, including Al Éxito--a state-wide mentorship program for Latino youth; New Leaders Council, a nonpartisan, nonprofit leadership institute that focuses on entrepreneurship, advocacy, team-building, and other change-maker skills; and YNPN, a local group of young nonprofit professionals who meet to share experiences, resources and connections to advance the nonprofit field in Des Moines. 

Ms. Abarca is a recent graduate of the Latina Leadership Initiative of Greater Des Moines, class of 2016.  In 2017, she received a Graduate Certificate in Professional Fundraising from Boston University. She resides in Des Moines, IA where she works as a Bilingual Services Library Assistant at Des Moines Public Library (DMPL). Through her position, she ensures that the Library is a welcoming environment that engages the community, celebrates culture, and promotes literacy.
