October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Page Eastin, DHR Client Assistance ProgramThe 2017 theme for National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is “Inclusion Drives Innovation" to reflect the role that diverse perspectives play in a thriving workforce.  Observed each October, NDEAM celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates the public about the value of a workforce inclusive of their skills and talents.

October is Filipino American History Month

Filino American Month Proclamation

On October 9, 2017, Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation recognizing October as Filipino American History Month to celebrate the history and heritage  of Filipino Americans and honor their historic contributions to Iowa.  Lt. Governor Adam Gregg presented the proclamation at a celebratory event to the Filipino American Association of Iowa at the Urbandale Public Library.    According to the 2015 American Community Survey, 7.6% of Iowans identified themselves as Filipino.  The estimated number of foreign-born people from the Phillipines was 3,709; those who speak Tagalog was 2,683.
