Justice Reform for Girls

Iowa is seeing an increase of girls in the number of arrests, court cases, and detention.  For the past year, the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Division of Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning, in partnership with the Friends of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women and the Iowa Task Force for Young Women, conducted a study to identify issues and gaps related to girls in Iowa’s juvenile justice system.   They have released a report entitled “Serious, Violent and Chronic Juvenile Female Offenders: Service and System Recommendations for Iowa”.  The report contains recommendations for policy and practices to better meet the needs of troubled girls.  As an alternative to detention, the focus is on family and community-based support services. The recommendations must be implemented using an approach that is gender-based, developmentally appropriate, and culturally responsive.  View the full report here.
